Waste-to-Energy is a Highlight of the South-European Conference ‘Save the Planet’, organized by Via Expo

 According to Ella Stengler, managing director of the Confederation of European Waste-to- Energy Plants (CEWEP), one of the biggest challenges in the European Environment policy is the reduction of landfilling. WTE plants are a very successful approach for turning waste into energy and it can be implemented in the Region of South-East Europe. This hot topic is a highlight of the ‘Save the Planet’ Conference on Waste Management & Recycling, held 28-30 March 2012 in Sofia Bulgaria. Marta Gurin will speak about the key role of WTE plants in sustainable waste management. The remaining waste which cannot be reused or recycled in a technically or economically viable way is a valuable energy source. Waste incineration with energy recovery is a proven technology successfully integrated in the waste management systems of many European countries. It helps to divert waste from landfills, provides locally available, cost-effective and sustainable energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels and contributes to the climate protection. The UK experience in developing of waste-to-energy infrastructure will be presented by Chindarat Taylor from Recourse Efficiency Pathway UK.  

In Japan, population density has a major influence on municipal solid waste (MSW) management.  Subsequently, the location of landfill sites is difficult, comparing to other countries, and MSW handling and disposal is costly. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the reduction of MSW and incineration has become the predominant treatment practice. Marius Grabda from the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM) will discuss the major technologies used in Japan for energy recovery from MSW as well the novel processes that are already operating in the country for effective energy recovery from MSW.

The conference will cover also the topics related to waste management, prevention and recycling.
